Think this Christmas will be a disappointment? Think again! So Danca is bringing you a virtual Nutcracker and we know you're going to love it!
There’s nothing quite like a trip to the theatre at Christmas-time to see the Nutcracker. For so many of us, the Nutcracker was the first ballet we ever saw as children. Seeing it each year remains on our Christmas to-do lists. Lots of us, I’m sure, also have memories of performing in the Nutcracker. Miming frantically in the background of that infamously long party scene, desperately trying to feign realistic conversation while listening excitedly for my cue in the music, is my abiding memory.
Christmas is all about nostalgia
Christmas is all about nostalgia and tradition; reflecting on times past and celebrating the things we love with the people we love. When I look back, many of my treasured ballet-memories feature the Nutcracker. Learning to cartwheel to be in the clowns dance (ginger); sneaking up to the side of the stage to jealously watch the older girls dancing the flutes in their pointe shoes; the dangerously-exuberant cardio warm-ups on the stage stairs so we’d be warm enough to slip into the splits during the Arabian (coffee) are just a few flashbacks the familiar music triggers that still make me smile.
The holiday is going to be a little different this year though. We could all probably do with the comfort of a tradition like a Christmas Nutcracker show. I’m sure the thrill of the familiar score, of the dazzling costumes and the delight of the Sugar Plum Fairy would bring a smile to many a face. While going to the theatre might be a little beyond our reach this Christmas, and Sugar Plum Fairies the world over have been sidelined, So Danca has made sure that we can still have a Nutcracker!
So Danca has made sure that we can still have a Nutcracker this year!
So Danca has been working on a fantastic Christmas treat for us all in the form of a "Virtual Nutcracker"! This one-of-a-kind event allowed individual dancers and studios to be a part of the first-ever virtual Nutcracker performance. Dancers are dancing their parts at home and in their studios and have submitted their clips to So Danca. These clips will be joined together to form one continuous recital of this beloved show. This is an opportunity to keep the tradition alive as it will be available to stream across the globe!
If the Nutcracker is one of your Christmas traditions, make sure you watch the innovative and beautiful show. This project is living proof that we can still dance together, apart. The final performance will be launched on Friday, December 18, 2020, so stay tuned to our socials. Happy Christmas from So Danca!
